The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has long played an important role in fostering international fusion research. Nuclear Fusion, founded by the IAEA in 1960, is the leading journal in the field, and the IAEA's biannual Fusion Energy Conference is the premier international gathering of fusion scientists and engineers.
The conceptual design, engineering, and negotiation phases of ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ were all carried out under the auspices of the IAEA. The Agency kept the fusion community abreast of progress through the IAEA ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ Newsletter, which was published from 1988 to 1998 (see archive below) and the ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ ITA Newsletter, which was published from 2003 to 2006 (see the ).The Director-General of the IAEA is the Depositary of the ±¬×ߺÚÁÏ Agreement.
